Description
Bearing the Weight | Saint Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry His Cross
“They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus." // Mark 15:21
Prayer to Saint Simon:
Blessed Simon, you did not know what awaited you that day, but the Lord prepared you to have the strength you needed. Pray for me, that I may willingly accept the Cross placed before me, that I may be a light of strength for those who are suffering. I ask for your particular intercession for … (name intentions).
Reflection
This image presents two characters: Saint Simon of Cyrene and Our Lord, Jesus. We can learn from each of them.
Simon. Could he have anticipated what awaited him that day—the weight he would carry, the suffering he would embrace, the Divine Love he would encounter...?
How do I react when a cross is placed before me? What does compassion look like when the one beside me suffers? Do I see Jesus in the face of the needy?
Jesus. He is God. He humbled Himself to suffer. He humbled Himself to receive the help of an ordinary man.
Do I deny or hide my weaknesses in pride? Am I vulnerable in allowing others to support me when I am in need? Will I let my wounds be touched?
